TACLOBAN CITY, Oct. 23 (PIA) -- As the province of Leyte marked the 75th Anniversary of Leyte Gulf Landings on October 20, 2019, the Philippine Information Agency met the surviving spouse of Veteran Celso Cayas Tolones, Pelagia Lebria Tolones who voiced out an appeal for the authorities concerned to grant her the benefits she deserves. Her husband, she said served as a messenger and cook during the World War II.
"Bisan nala guti-ay para tak pagkaon komo ako himatay na,"(I just need it for my daily subsistence as I am ill) Mrs. Tolones appealed to the concerned government agency for her benefits.
According to Mrs. Tolones, her husband who was 19 years old at that time, was helping the American and Filipino soldiers by serving their meals.
Tolones' daughter, Rosemarie Tolones Rape, admitted that her father was not able to receive any benefit for veterans.
She said she has submitted and complied with all the requirements such as military record, serial number, baptismal certificate, NSO certificate, postal ID and other pertinent documents with the Philippine Veteran Affairs Office (PVAO) at Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
PIA decided to call the Philippine Veterans Assistance Office and accompanied the daughter to the PVAO in Tacloban.
Based on the available information provided by Mr. Paul Harry R. Lobrigo, the Veterans Assistance Officer II of PVAO Tacloban, the claim of Mr. Tolones was denied on May 5, 2010.
This is the reason why the claimant has not received the benefits.
However, Mr. Lobrigo graciously encouraged the claimant to provide more documents to PVAO that may warrant the reprocessing of the claim.
"Kung nagda-doubt la gihap kamo nga naghuhunahuna nga nagsayop an opisina hadto nga desisyon hadto nga appeal, then mag-reappeal hiya with new documents nga makakapag-prove nga hiya usa nga veteran ngan makaka - warrant for reprocessing," (The survivor may re-appeal with new documents to prove that he was a true veteran so the claim can be processed) said Lobrigo.
The officer further said that PVAO is eager to look for deserving veterans and to give them benefits provided such claimant can provide all documentary requirements.
"Diri kami nagtatanggal hin Veterans. In fact, nagbibiling kami hin mga Veteran kay mandated kami by the law ngan para mahatagan hira hin benepisyo," (We don't drop Veterans, in fact we look for Veterans as being mandated by the law and to provide them their benefits) Lobrigo further said.
