Red Cross frightened that global turndown will affect funds
Columbus News.Net Tuesday 18th November, 2008
The Red Cross has said it may have to cut staff and shelve projects, to counter the downturn in donor contributions.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have said they are bracing for a recession which will bring greater social unrest in poor countries, with high food prices being compounded by slowing economic growth and job losses.
While the organisation has said it is certain donors will honour existing pledges, it is readying for a shortfall in 2009.
Through its network of national societies, the Red Cross assists some 150 million people annually.
