Further improvement in US relations with Libya

Columbus News.Net
Tuesday 18th November, 2008

As a sign of improved US/Libyan relations, a son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi has been in Washington for meetings with Bush administration officials.

Saif al-Islam Gadhafi, the son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi, is recognised as a diplomatic figure and heads his family’s charitable foundation.

His high-level talks in Washington have only come about because Libya renounced terrorism and weapons of mass destruction in 2003.

The young Gadhafi will see White House officials and members of Congress before meeting on Thursday with US Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.

Rice visited Libya in September, at which time human rights issues and terror compensation claims were discussed.

In an unprecedented phone call on Monday, President Bush telephoned President Moammar Gadhafi in Libya to express satisfaction over the implementation of the accord clearing away terrorism-related compensation claims.

Libya on October 31 paid $1.5 billion into a fund for families of victims of the 1988 bombing of a U.S. Pan Am jumbo jet over Scotland.
